A frog and a scorpion met on the bank of a river.
“I cannot swim,” said the scorpion. “Please, will you carry me across?”
“Yes,” said the frog, “but you dare not sting me. If you do, we will both drown.”
So they set out together, the scorpion riding on the frog’s back. But when they were halfway across the river, the scorpion stung the frog, and both creatures drowned.
“Why?” screamed the frog as paralysis set in. “Now you have killed us both!”
“I cannot help my nature,” replied the rueful scorpion. “But you knew I was poison when you picked me up.”
